GSI Short Calls Projects are funded by GSI. They are less than 12 months duration and less than €25,000. They are open to academic and non-academic institutes. GSI Short Calls Projects
24 projects related to Marine were funded through the GSI Short Calls. Topics covered included offshore energy projects foundation, the Wild Atlantic Way, coastal infrastructure GIS, UAV coastal zone mapping, training programme, coastal modelling, micro plastics, coastal and underwater landslides, 3D simulation of past marine landscapes, and water quality.
INFOMAR Research
Our seabed data drives national and international marine research across a diverse range of topics. We don’t have all the answers but we enable others to ask the right questions that will lead to a safer, more sustainable marine environment. We promote research, industry partnership, and encourage applied collaborative proposals, particularly in areas which may be subject to future commercial opportunities, growth and jobs.
GSI Masters by Research Projects
In 2023 Geological Survey Ireland launched a new call for Scholarships for students wishing to undertake a Masters by Research, where projects should aim to support GSI programmes and/or use GSI datasets.
GSI Targeted Research Projects
The GSI Targeted Projects Call was launched in 2023, and awarded funding to 5 projects.
TOSCA
TOSCA (Tectonic Ocean Spreading at the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone) is a scientific expedition co-led by GSI which explored the geological and biological characteristics of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This study will help detail the mode of spreading occurring at the ridge and will highlight mechanisms that form and erode the 4km high mountainous ridges found in the Atlantic. The study will further detail chemical interactions of the rocks and ocean water leading to interesting mineral and biological results.
MINDeSEA
Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) are involved in the GeoERA Seabed MINerals Deposits in European SEAs: Metallogeny and Geological Potential for Strategic and Critical Raw Materials (MINDeSEA) project to address the principal types of seafloor mineral resources in European Seas with a view to evaluate the potential for strategic and critical raw materials; necessary to support the raw materials industrial needs of modern society.
