Valentia Slate secures World Heritage Stone status

At 00:32 UTC on the 6th of May 2023 an M2.5 earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 km. The event occurred near Glenveagh National Park in northwest Donegal, Ireland (see map below). The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) operated by DIAS has received reports that the event was felt throughout the Donegal area.

The GSI launched a new 1:100k bedrock map at Geoscience 2018. The new map, produced by the Geological Mapping Programme, maintains all of the updates from the 2016 map (new coastline, migration to ITM) and incorporates updates from the 1:50k series in the Northeastern and North Midlands Blocks. The map is available online and for download.

A survey of the companies comprising the Geoscience Ireland business cluster has shown that 128 new jobs were created in the second half of 2017. This brings the overall job creation figure for 2017 to 354, 276 of which were created by small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) - the largest yearly growth since its inception in 2012.
