What We Use
We use different types of equipment to fulfil our mapping duties, whether on land, offshore or from the air. Technology complements our traditional mapping techniques. It supports us in drawing an ever more accurate picture of Ireland’s seabed and help us to better understand the ground beneath our feet.
Vessels
We own and operate several research vessels as part of the INFOMAR seabed mapping programme, a joint venture between Geological Survey Ireland and the Marine Institute.
Geophysics Equipment
Our Geophysics equipment allows us to measure soil permeability, resistivity in near-surface features and magnetic susceptibility of rocks.
Drilling Rigs
We operate two drilling rigs: one is used for rotary coring and the other one is used for auguring Quaternary samples.
Water Tracing Dyes
Water tracing is a special method of investigation using dyes to reveal how water connects underground.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
We employ UAVs to map the coastal and intertidal zones as part of the INFOMAR seabed mapping and CHERISH climate change and coastal heritage programmes.
