New GSI Masters by Research Scholarship Call
Geological
Survey Ireland has launched a new call for Scholarships for students
wishing to undertake a Masters by Research (e.g. MSc, MEng, M. Ed.).
Projects should aim to support the GSI programmes and/or use GSI
datasets.
The call will comprise of two stages: and Expression of
Interest and a Full Proposal stage. Full proposals can only
be submitted once an Expression of Interest is submitted and the topic
is deemed eligible. The Full proposal stage must be submitted by both a
Lead Applicant (i.e. academic supervisor) and the named Scholar.
Topics
- Soil science and health (projects should include the use of Tellus data)
- Marine
 geology & mapping: (a) offshore seafloor mapping – large-scale
novel approaches using INFOMAR datasets or (b) Coastal monitoring:
Assessing coastal change in Ireland
- Groundwater
resources, protection or climate change impacts, focussing on one or
more of the following: (a) quality, (b) quantity, (c) flow pathways, (d)
 ecosystem support
- Minerals, including minerals prospectivity mapping
- Geohazards:
 (a) towards further development of landslide hazard mapping  or (b)
Earth Observation and applications to Irish geohazards combining
traditional mapping with modern techniques
- Artificial intelligence and applications to geoscience data, e.g. using GSI hyperspectral data
- The potential application of digital twins in geoscience
- Geothermal energy resource assessment for Ireland
- The potential for geoscience to support education curricula in Ireland
- Geological
mapping (Quaternary or Bedrock mapping) combining traditional mapping
with innovative techniques and datasets (e.g. GSI hyperspectral data)
- Geotechnical
Engineering: (a) Characterising the subsurface in urban environments
using geotechnical data or (b) Innovative applications of geotechnical
and borehole data (projects should include the use of GSI geotechnical
databases)
- Quantifying Geological Heritage value using audited geological heritage site data
- Towards improved management of the subsurface in Ireland
