​Cork City is located on Ireland's Southern Atlantic coastal margin. Cork is Ireland's second city and the county town of Co. Cork, Ireland's largest county. Its picturesque undulations are home to a population of c. 120,000 souls. The city straddles the lower reaches and tidal section of the River Lee. The city's coat of arms, bearing the motto Statio Bene Fide Carinis – a safe Harbour for ships, underlines Cork's longstanding status as a major port city. Cork City Council's administrative boundary, which corresponds to the area of analysis of this project, covers an area of almost 40 km².

Ground instabilities affect parts of Cork City and the Geological Survey of Ireland has developed a map, and this report which shows and describes areas of potential or observed ground instabilities as part of the FP7 PanGeo project. Geological Survey of Ireland datasets along with Ordnance Survey of Ireland mapping, PSI datasets and limited field validation were used to develop this interpretation.
