What is GSEU?
Under the five-year Coordination and Support Action, The GSEU Project will develop a plan for a sustainable Geological Service for Europe as a permanent collaborative network for European geological surveys. GSEU will serve European society and support policies on water, energy, raw materials, hazards and all other areas requiring subsurface data and expertise. GSEU will contribute to environmental sustainability and social prosperity in Europe through this service, supported by a powerful and comprehensive digital infrastructure.
The overall objectives of GSEU are to develop pan-European harmonised data and information services across Europe with a focus on:
- Critical Raw Materials
- Geothermal energy resources and subsurface storage capacities for sustainable energy carriers and CO2 sequestration
- Groundwater dynamics and quality
- Geological and climate change information for coastal vulnerability assessment and geological baseline information
How does Geological Survey Ireland contribute?
Geological Survey Ireland contributes to GSEU by providing expertise on raw materials.
The main impacts of this is:
- To strenghten the network of European geological surveys concerning critical raw materials data and mineral resources sustainable management.
- To contribute to the Geological Service for Europe by providing services and knowledge to help secure the EU's critical raw materials supplies.
- To increase sourcing of critical raw materials from primary and secondary sources in Europe, decreasing Europe's dependence on imports and intensifying the competitiveness of European power generation, energy storage and related transport technologies.
