Assessment of main contributing factors leading to three major peatland failures in Leitrim, Kerry and Donegal

A joint project between Geological survey Ireland (DECC) and National Parks and Wildlife Service (DHLGH). Assessment and reports prepared by Fehily, Timoney and Company.

Project Overview

In 2020 three major peatland landslides occurred in Counties Donegal (Meenbog), Leitrim (Shass Mountain) and Kerry (Mount Eagle). Geological Survey Ireland and National Parks and Wildlife Service commissioned a joint project to characterise the environmental setting of the landslide sites to consider the main conditioning and triggering factors to the failures.

The failure at Shass Mountain occurred on 28 June 2020. In the following months, two more failures were recorded, Meenbog on 12 November 2020 and Mount Eagle on 15 November 2020.

In addition to identifying the main factors considered to have contributed to the three major peat failures in 2020, the results of this assessment will also be used to assess the potential to update Geological Survey Ireland's National Landslide Susceptibility Map, and to produce technical notes for documentation related to peatland use and peat stability in Ireland.
