‘Blood thirsty ticks and ravenous green aliens’ by John Sherry (Tobin Consulting Engineers)

​The IAH will kick-off the autumn with a Technical Discussion Meeting focussing on the fieldwork element of hydrogeologists’ jobs. It looks at personal well-being and also ecological protection.

‘Blood Thirsty Ticks and Ravenous Green Aliens, protection from tick borne diseases in the field & an introduction to riparian invasive plant species’ will be presented by John Sherry, ecologist with Tobin Consulting Engineers.

Brief summary of talk:

Ticks: An examination of protective measures against ticks in Ireland to reduce the risk of contracting tick-borne diseases while working in the field. We will discuss the ticks found in Ireland and their ecology, the major diseases they carry, how to protect from bites and signs to look out for, followed by what to do if you are bitten.

Invasive species:  An introduction to the most commonly-encountered invasive plant species in Irish waterways. We will discuss how to identify them, the issues they cause, what to do if they are encountered and methods involved in their control.
