Projects

Collaborations with national and international partners on funded programmes designed to enhance the public's understanding of geological heritage.

We often act as partners in large multi-agency or multi-national projects to bring long-term benefits to specific areas of geoheritage importance in Ireland or to improve best practice in methods of public engagement in geoheritage.

Geoheritage County Audits are part of our ongoing programme of auditing sites of geological importance as defined by the Irish Geological Heritage themes. Much of the country is now complete and more information on this is available in the activities section of Geoheritage in this website.

Current County Geological Heritage Audits 2022

Geological heritage audits of sites of geological importance within County Limerick, County Cork and Cork City are currently underway. This work is typically carried out in association with the relevant Local Authorities and the Heritage Council.

Annual Geoheritage Grant Funding

Geological Survey Ireland offers a number of small grants each year to support the sustainable development, promotion and recognition of Ireland's geoheritage. These grants are aimed at local community-driven outreach and development initiatives with a geoheritage theme. The grants are made through an open competitive application process.

EuroGeoSurveys

Geological Survey Ireland is represented in the Geoheritage Expert Group (GhEG) of EuroGeoSurveys, whose mission is to share the knowledge and expertise of the national and regional geological surveys active in geoconservation. The GhEG seeks proper sustainable management of geoheritage as part of Europe's natural heritage, and the development of a European geoconservation platform to better serve the needs of society.
