Geological Survey Ireland are developing the National Geothermal Database (NGD) to drive adoption of geothermal energy in Ireland. The purpose of the database is to collect high quality publicly available data to encourage sustainable geothermal development and inform policy. The initial phase of the project was the National Geothermal Database Design Project (NGDP), which ran from July 2021 to January 2023.
During the initial stages, the structure and workflow of the database was defined. Key data sources and products were identified which are now being developed in the current phase of the project.
The aim of the current NGD Product Delivery project is to collect, collate and analyse data to reduce geological uncertainty, quantify the national geothermal resource and promote awareness of the benefits of geothermal energy to help people choose geothermal. This will run from May 2023 to May 2025
The NGD products will be publicly, and freely, available on GSI's website to benefit all stakeholders that are interested in the use of geothermal energy in Ireland.
