Climate Action

Climate Action

Climate disruption is already having diverse and wide ranging impacts on Ireland's environment, society, economic and natural resources. The Government of Ireland compiled the Climate Action Plan with an ambitious course of actions over the coming years to address this issue.

Through our activities and programmes at Geological Survey Ireland, we are in a unique position to assist with climate action as set out below, along with specific tasks related to the Climate Action Plan itself.

Climate Action at Geological Survey Ireland

As geoscientists, we understand the Earth, the necessity for accurate and robust data for underpinning policy and guidelines, and we have an established network of multi-disciplinary national and international partners with whom we can share best practice. Our climate action work is divided into the three broad themes of hazards, water and carbon.

Climate Action Plan 2021

Geological Survey Ireland is involved in a number of the tasks listed in Ireland's Climate Action plan 2021, supporting ocean energy research, examining the potential of geothermal energy for district heating, monitoring groundwater, supporting the Just Transition, mapping geohazards and evaluating natural resources.

Climate Research at Geological Survey Ireland

Our teams are involved in climate research in a number of key areas. We collaborate with partners in Ireland and internationally to better understand the interaction of the solid Earth with our atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. We also provide data on past climates, the ongoing impact of climate change on our natural world, and we look at how these impacts will affect us into the future.

Climate Research Coordination Group

We fund external research activities and undertake research through our programmes. The 2019 Annual Report of the national Climate Research Coordination Group summarises all research activities in the climate area from GSI and other funding organisations.

Climate Action Plan 2019

Geological Survey Ireland is involved in a number of the tasks listed in Ireland's Climate Action plan 2019, supporting ocean energy research, examining the potential of geothermal energy for district heating and evaluating natural resources.
