Collaborations

Collaborations

The Geological Survey collaborates with several national and international research groups, agencies and organisations. These collaborations range from research activities and outputs to data provision and development of data products.

The Geological Survey also partners with national infrastructures and research centres.

Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for protecting and improving the environment as a valuable asset for the people of the Ireland. It operates independently under the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment. Collaborations with Geological Survey Ireland include co-funding of common research areas and direct collaborations primarily in the area of GroundwaterSoils Health, and Minerals for Circular Economy.

A database of water related research projects can be viewed on Droplet.

Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland's mission is to play a leading role in transforming Ireland into a society based on sustainable energy structures, technologies and practices. To fulfil this mission SEAI aims to provide well-timed and informed advice to Government, and deliver a range of programmes efficiently and effectively, while engaging and motivating a wide range of stakeholders and showing continuing flexibility and innovation in all activities.
Collaborations with Geological Survey Ireland include primarily geoenergy (e.g. geothermal) and policy in relation to uptake  and support for renewable energy.

Earth Surface Research Laboratory

Geological Survey Ireland has funded new analytical and research facilities at Trinity College Dublin.

Instruments include a WDXRF, EDXRF, Hg analyser, elemental analyser and sample preparation facilities. The lab will service Tellus analytical requirements and will provide research facilities for the Earth science research community on the Island of Ireland.

Fulbright-GSI Awards

The Fulbright Commission in Ireland is a bilateral partnership supported by the U.S. Department of State and the Irish Government's Department of Foreign Affairs. It is a registered charity with funding derived from Irish and U.S. governments, higher education institutions, public agencies, organisations and donations.

The Geological Survey Ireland established a collaboration with the Fulbright Commission in Ireland in 2015 and since funds Irish researchers to spend time in a US based research institute, or US researchers to spend time in Ireland.

More information on the Programme here.

Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is an independent centre for research. Its Geophysics section studies the tectonic and dynamic structure of the Earth using the methods of physics combined with the other geosciences – geology, geochemistry, petrology, geochronology and paleoecology. The main areas of research are seismology, electromagnetism, the geodynamics of continents and oceans and potential fields (gravity and magnetism).

In addition to geophysical research, the Geophysics Section maintains the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN). The Section is also the National Data Centre (NDC) for Ireland’s contribution to the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

Geological Survey Ireland supports the onshore and offshore national seismic networks and related infrastructure, and the Community Seismology Programme.

Met Éireann

Met Éireann is Ireland's National Meteorological Service. Its mission is to monitor, analyse and predict Ireland's weather and climate and to provide a range of high quality meteorological and related information to the public.

Collaborations with Geological Survey Ireland include research in the area of groundwater forecasting. Met Éireann provides meteorological data which enables Geological Survey Ireland (and its research collaborators) to test groundwater flood forecast methodologies.

Teagasc

Teagasc – the Agriculture and Food Development Authority – is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities.
Collaborations with Geological Survey Ireland include research in the area of soil chemistry and food and animal health, in particular through our Tellus programme.

iCRAG

iCRAG is the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre in Applied Geosciences hosted by University College Dublin, comprises a team of 150 researchers creating solutions for a sustainable society across eight universities and institutions.
In iCRAG researchers develop innovative science and technologies to better understand the Earth's past, present, and future and how people are connected to it; in areas that are critical to society and the economy.
iCRAG is supported by Science Foundation Ireland, Geological Survey Ireland and industry partners.
Geological Survey Ireland has co-funded PhDs in the areas of Environmental Geoscience as well as projects in the Geohazards and Geotechnical Engineering.

Marine Institute

The Marine Institute undertakes, coordinates, promotes and assists marine research and development and provides such services related to research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute, will promote economic development and create employment and protect the marine environment.
Collaborations with Geological Survey Ireland include the
INFOMAR programme and co-funding of marine based research in Ireland.

Irish Centre for High End Computing

GSI and ICHEC are collaborating on a number of key areas including improved processing techniques for Tellus airborne data and modelling of groundwater resources.
