Research Assistant for Facies Analysis of Carboniferous Limestones at UCD School of Earth Sciences

Published:

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Assistant within UCD School of Earth Sciences to work on Facies analysis of Carboniferous limestones as a tool in reconstruction of depositional environments.

UCD seek a research assistant from 1st June 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter, to support activities on the above project. The proposed research is a test of the potential of visually distinctive horizons and short intervals in slabbed core and outcrop to constrain interpretations of the depositional setting in which Carboniferous limestones in central Ireland were deposited on the basis of variation in fossil content and sedimentary matrix (biofabric). The research is in collaboration with the Geological Survey Ireland and will involve cores drilled as part of their regional mapping programme.

The position is available to end December 2020, and the appointee will play the lead role in the collection and analysis of data. It is confirmed that the project will commence via remote working using on-line resources, with, we anticipate, field and lab-based activities later in the year (if feasible). The appointee may also have responsibility for the training and supervision of a number of internees working on the project at some stage.

The appointee will be based at UCD but informal enquiries can be made to any of the following: Dr Patrick Orr (patrick.orr@ucd.ie ), Dr John Murray (john.murray@nuigalway.ie ) Dr Brian McConnell (Brian.McConnell@gsi.ie )

Salary range: €22,609 – €29,650 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 21 May 2020

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
