Geological Survey Ireland Lecture on ‘Geoscience Solutions for the Climate Crisis’ at Royal Irish Academy on Tuesday, 21 January.

Professor Chris Jackson delivered the Geological Survey Ireland lecture at the Royal Irish Academy on Tuesday, 21 January 2025. The theme of the lecture was 'Geoscience Solutions for the Climate Crisis'. This was the first lecture of the series which aims to raise awareness of geosciences and its relevance to society's needs and challenges.

Chris Jackson explored how geoscience can support the development of low-carbon energy resources and the important role that geostorage will play in the transition to sustainable energy such as the topics of Carbon storage, Hydrogen use and storage, geothermal as a potential for Irish energy, and aspects of nuclear waste storage.

The lecture was followed by a panel discussion chaired by Geological Survey Ireland Director, Koen Verbruggen and gave an Irish perspective on the topic. Koen was joined by Ireland-based scientists Professor of Geography at Trinity College Dublin, Iris Moeller, GSNI Information and Infrastructure team leader, Kirsten Lemon, Regional Co-ordinator CARO, Senior Scientist at Cork County Council, Kevin Motherway and Technical Director of Subsurface Storage, WSP.
