Dr Jim Hodgson from the Tellus project in will appear on the science series "10 Things to Know About" on RTÉ One at 8.30pm on Monday, 27 November 2023. The episode, titled "Where You Live," focuses on how the environment around our homes can impact our health.

In the episode, Jim discusses the importance of healthy soil for growing crops and grazing animals and emphasises the need to understand and maintain soil health, as soil types can vary greatly depending on location. As a geophysicist, Jim leads a project to map Ireland's soil and assess the natural conditions, ensuring that samples are taken from uncontaminated locations. The team map out 2km grids and identify areas that provide representative samples of the soil for that region.

Other highlights of the episode include the importance of safe drinking water as a fundamental human right, the establishment of Ireland's first Pollen Forecast Network, and the fascinating story of how "pollen fingerprints" were used to catch a killer.

The Tellus project combines airborne and ground-based surveying to gather information on Ireland's geology and examine the chemical elements contained in different soils across the country. So far, the project has analysed and mapped 50% of the soil across the country, with the goal of completing the work within the next two years.
