This book attempts to describe and explain the geography and geology of the physical features of Ireland, as depicted on the accompanying geological map of Ireland. The geological map is simply a representation of the sub-surface of Ireland if all the soil and glacial deposits were removed down to the solid bedrock. As such, it is an interpretation, as in most places rock is not exposed at the surface. While the map depicts the geography (i.e. distribution) of rocks of different ages and types at the present, the book gives a historical geography (palaeogeography) of each Earth period, as shown in the map legend. Within each Earth period (or sub-period), physical processes and the resultant environments are described and explained and related to examples in different parts of the world today.
