Fulbright-GSI Awards

The Fulbright Commission awards highly competitive, merit-based grants to international postgraduate students, scholars, and professionals to study, research, and lecture in the United States and for Americans to undertake similar activities outside the US.

It was founded by United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946 and is now one of the most prestigious award programmes worldwide operating in over 155 countries; fifty-three Fulbright alumni have won Nobel Prizes and seventy-eight have won Pulitzer Prizes.

The Fulbright Commission in Ireland is a bilateral partnership supported by the U.S. Department of State and the Irish Government's Department of Foreign Affairs (with a Service Level Agreement with the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht for 2014-2017). It is a registered charity with funding derived from Irish and U.S. governments, higher education institutions, public agencies, organisations and donations.

The Geological Survey Ireland developed a collaboration with the Fulbright Commission in Ireland since 2015 and funds Irish researchers to spend time in a US based research institute, or US researchers to spend time in Ireland.

All the Fulbright-GSI awardees can be found compiled in one document here.

Educational exchange can turn nations into people, contributing as no other form of communication can to the humanizing of international relations.

    —Senator J. William Fulbright

"The GSI funding provided an important opportunity for international experience and collaboration with US scholars in my field and beyond. This is crucial to academic research development and is also an advantage when applying for competitive funding calls. I believe that the Fulbright Scholarship award greatly contributes to my record of achievement as an academic. I have also presented the research at academic meetings and drawn on the knowledge to develop research projects and papers. It has helped fast-track my career and provided me with the contacts and resources to develop a new area of research in my chosen field of climate politics and communication."

Brenda McNally, Incoming Awardee 2019-2020

"This scheme is an excellent way to spark international collaborations that would be unlikely to occur otherwise. There are very few ways to fund such collaborations. It allows awardees to learn about the geology of Ireland and learn from local experts. On the other side, it allows host institutions to add an expert to their staff, who will have different perspectives and skills. In my own example, the students also benefitted from the interaction."

Tracy Frank, Fulbright-GSI Awardee 2020

These fields include (but are not limited to) geological & marine mapping, geological processes, Earth observation, geohazards, groundwater, raw materials & minerals, public perception of Earth resources. Relevant applications in Big Data and Sustainable Development are particularly welcome. Information regarding applications is available on the
Fulbright Commission Website.

Deadline for applications: 31 October 2019

"The GSI-funded Fulbright has two main important contributions. Firstly, it promotes cultural exchange that is incredibly valuable to all parties – i.e., both countries, both institutions, the awardee, and their hosts. Secondly, it exposes Irish or Ireland-based researchers to a whole new geoscience community, bringing skills and knowledge that we would otherwise lack back to our host institutions. For me, I particular benefitted from seeing how a high-calibre scientific laboratory operates – this is not restricted to the analytical side of things but, perhaps more importantly, seeing how a driven but also happy research group operates. These are skills that cannot be taught but can only be gained through scholarships/studentships such as this, which give us exposure to different approaches."

Gavin Kenny, Fulbright-GSI Awardee 2018
