Investigating the relationship between Tellus topsoil geochemical and airborne radiometric measurements of potassium, uranium and thorium

​The work presented in this dissertation compares potassium, uranium and thorium concentration data for the shallow subsurface acquired during the Tellus airborne geophysical and ground geochemical surveys. Radiometric data points were resampled and joined one-to-one with shallow (‘A’) topsoil geochemical data points using a GIS to allow the relationship between the two datasets be investigated across varying geological units, geochemical signatures, soil types and land use classes. The study also included a comparison of the topsoil geochemistry as determined by two distinct analytical methods, namely inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRFS), and examined the use of simple linear regression equations to predict soil concentrations of K, U and Th from remotely sensed radiometric data.
