The Groundwater Body (GWB) is the management unit under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Groundwater bodies are subdivisions of large geographical areas of aquifers so that they can be effectively managed in order to protect the groundwater and linked surface waters.
The GWB delineation methodology is described in the document, "Approach to Delineation of Groundwater Bodies" (Guidance Document GW2, WFD Groundwater Working Group).
The GWB descriptions were developed by Geological Survey Ireland and are based on a set of conceptual models that were developed to fit the range of hydrogeological settings in Ireland. Each GWB has been assigned to one of the conceptual models, which include karst aquifers, productive fissured aquifers, poorly productive aquifers, and sand and gravel aquifers.
