Geoparks and Geotourism

Geoparks and Geotourism

Geoparks refer to UNESCO Global Geoparks af which we have three on the island of Ireland; Copper Coast in Co. Waterford, Burren and Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare, and Marble Arch Caves in Fermanagh and Cavan.  Geological Survey Ireland is a partner in all three Geoparks and provides support and encouragement in the promotion of geoheritage and earth science education, and protection of Geosites within the Geoparks.

Geotourism refers to the use of geoheritage as part of the local tourism product.  Whether known or not, geology is the basis of much of the tourism in Ireland.  We support an efforts taken by local authorities or organisations to promote the use to geoheritage.
