Tile 1 Description
From defining karst to its distribution in Ireland, the various landforms and hazards associated to these specific landscapes, to the data we collect to better understand Irish karst and the implications for groundwater pollution.
Tile 2 Description
Groundwater is a major natural resource in Ireland providing between 20-25% of the drinking water supplies. But harmful substances (pollutants) can enter groundwater.
Tile 3 Description
Iron is naturally present in many types of rock. It is commonly found in Irish groundwater, sometimes in amounts that can be problematic. Geological Survey Ireland has prepared an information leaflet for well owners whose wells have excessive iron concentrations.
Tile 4 Description
Groundwater hardness arises mainly from the solution of limestone into groundwater. Many Irish industrial and domestic water users are concerned about the hardness of their water and invest in water softeners to counteract the impacts of hard water. Geological Survey Ireland has created a preliminary Total Hardness map for Irish groundwater.
