The Cunningham College Awards recognise achievements in undergraduate mapping projects. They are awarded in memory of Mark Cunningham, former Assistant Director of Geological Survey Ireland.

Two equal prizes of €350 are awarded to the best undergraduate projects by students graduating from Irish universities each year.

2022 Cunningham Award winners are:

Conor Farrell, UCD (Supervisor: John Walsh): The Bedrock Geology of the Area South-West of Castletownbere.

Rachel White, TCD (Supervisor: Chris Nicholas): The Geology of Glencraff and Lough Fee, North Galway.

After two years of virtual prize-giving and a location move, the event was also an opportunity for Koen Verbruggen, Director of Geological Survey Ireland, to reminisce about the work carried out by the Geological Survey Ireland Programmes in 2022. This was also the occasion for Peadar McArdle to introduce his new book "Bountiful Earth" and for Siobhán Power to talk on some of Geological Survey Ireland's most recent outreach activities such as the Down to Earth - Exploring Ireland's Geology exhibition and the very well received TV series "The Island".
