With a total prize fund of €1,000 the Du Noyer Photo Competition accepts images of geological interest taken either in Ireland or overseas. The competition's closing date this year is Friday 28 August 2020. Please remember to provide location information and when photographs were taken. So get out there and get snapping!

How to attend:

Calling all photographers! Why not head out into the outdoors and snap some geological landscapes in your area. Then enter the annual Du Noyer Photo Competition run by Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) in conjunction with the Irish Geological Association (IGA).

This year the competition has a total prize fund of €1,000 and it accepts images of geological interest taken either in Ireland or overseas. The competition's closing date is Friday 28 August 2020 so get snapping! The lucky winners will be notified by e-mail and invited to attend an awards ceremony and exhibition in the Dublin offices of GSI at a date to be confirmed in December 2020. Please remember while outdoors to follow HSE guidelines on social distancing in times of COVID-19.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:

Irish category
1st - €500
2nd - €200
3rd - €100

Overseas category winner - €200

How to enter:

Entries can only be accepted by e-mail and sent to: DuNoyerPhotoCompetition@gmail.com
Entries will be accepted until 15:00, Friday 28 August 2020.
There is no application fee to enter.

Please include the following information:

  • Name and postal address
  • Short description of geological content
  • The place, ideally reference location and date when taken

You may submit a maximum of 4 images, illustrating any aspect of field or scenic geological landscapes.

Photos don't necessarily need to be taken this year. Photos taken in previous years can be submitted this year as long as they haven't been entered in this competition before.

Image resolution must be 300dpi minimum. Images with lower resolution will not be accepted.

It is up to each entrant to ensure that images are their own work and previously unpublished.

Current staff/contract employees of Geological Survey Ireland are not eligible to participate in this competition.

Judging:

The competition will be judged by a panel including representatives of the IGA, the GSI and external nominees and their decision will be final. Entries will be exhibited and prizes awarded at the Cunningham Awards ceremony in the GSI Dublin offices in December.

GSI reserves the right to reproduce entries in its publications and promotional activities with due acknowledgement. Entries may be used for the GSI Calendar 2020.

Entries will be accepted up to 15.00, Friday 28 August 2020.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Creativity (25 marks)
  • Technical skill of the photographer (25 marks)
  • Geological content of photograph (50 marks)
