​Dr Sadhbh Baxter of NUI Galway will present a three-part evening course on the Galway Granite batholith in March 2018. The batholith, a  large body of igneous rock formed by the intrusion and solidification of magma, is 80 kilometres long. Topics include the history of mapping of the batholith, the current map and Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) online map resources. Dr Baxter will provide us with an insight into the geochronology (dating), geochemistry, structure and interpretation of the batholith. The course will also include practical elements which will provide an opportunity to study lithologies (hand specimens) and view the mineralogy (thin sections) using microscopes. Finally we will be given an outline of potential future research on the batholith.

The cost of the course for the three nights is: Members: €30, Non-members: €45.
